Anyone who spends the day at a monitor knows the feeling. Around four or five in the afternoon the eyes go dry, and when you look up at something across the room it takes a beat to come into focus.

That is usually not deteriorating vision. It is the result of using your eyes the same way for hours. Understanding the mechanism points to a few things you can change without leaving your desk.

You blink less

Concentrating on a screen noticeably reduces blink rate. When we focus hard on something, we naturally hold our eyes open longer.

Blinking spreads the tear film evenly across the eye surface. Blink less and that surface dries out, which produces the gritty, stinging feeling. It is also why drops help briefly and then the sensation returns — the cause sits upstream, in the blinking.

Remembering to blink deliberately is hard to sustain. What works better is building in moments where you look away from the screen, because you blink naturally when you do.

The focusing muscle stays contracted

Looking at something close requires a muscle inside the eye to contract and hold focus. Spend hours at screen distance and that muscle stays contracted the whole time.

The brief blur when you look into the distance is that muscle taking time to relax. It is much like standing up after sitting a long time and finding your legs stiff.

The widely used guideline is 20-20-20: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for around 20 seconds. Treat the numbers as a reminder to send your focus far away periodically rather than as a precise prescription.

Monitor position matters more than expected

A screen above eye level makes you open your eyes wider. More exposed surface dries faster.

Placing the top of the screen slightly below eye level angles your gaze gently downward and lets your eyelids cover more of the surface. A laptop flat on a desk usually sits too low and bends the neck instead, so a stand plus an external keyboard tends to be better for both eyes and neck.

For distance, roughly an arm's length is the common recommendation. Sitting closer makes the focusing muscle work harder.

Brightness and contrast

A bright screen in a dark room forces your eyes to keep adapting, which is tiring. The basic fix is matching screen brightness to the surrounding light.

A practical check: hold a sheet of white paper next to the screen. If the paper looks much darker than the screen's white background, the screen is too bright.

Increasing text size helps too. Repeatedly leaning toward the screen to read small type loads the eyes and the neck at the same time.

Things worth adjusting

  • Set the top of the screen slightly below eye level
  • Keep roughly an arm's length between your eyes and the screen
  • Match screen brightness to the ambient light
  • Increase text size until you no longer lean in
  • Stand up once an hour and look at something far away
  • If the room is dry, raise humidity or ventilate

Most evening eye fatigue comes from looking at the same distance the same way for too long. Distance, height, brightness, and how often you look away — adjusting those four is often enough to feel a difference.
