Most students use the same study methods they were taught in school: read the chapter, highlight important points, review the highlights. These methods feel productive because they're familiar and relatively effortless. The problem is that cognitive science research consistently shows they're among the least effective techniques for long-term retention.
The most robust finding in learning research over the past 40 years is the Testing Effect (also called Retrieval Practice Effect): actively recalling information strengthens memory far more than passively reviewing it. Simply put, taking a quiz beats re-reading the same material multiple times, and the gap is larger than most people expect.
The Classic Study — One Read vs. Three Tests
In a landmark 2006 study by Roediger and Karpicke, students were divided into three groups and given the same science text to study:
- Group A: Read the text four times (SSSS)
- Group B: Read three times, then took one free-recall test (SSTS)
- Group C: Read once, then took three free-recall tests (STTT)
Immediately after studying, Group A performed best — reading more times created stronger short-term familiarity. But when tested one week later, the results reversed dramatically:

Why Retrieval Practice Works — The Neuroscience
The brain uses a biological cost-benefit system to decide what to store long-term. Information that's frequently accessed gets reinforced — the neural pathways associated with it become stronger and faster. Information that's rarely accessed gets pruned to conserve energy.
When you re-read something, the information is essentially presented to you. Your brain registers familiarity but doesn't strengthen the retrieval pathway because it didn't have to search for the information — it was handed to it.
When you take a quiz and have to recall information without prompts, your brain actively searches memory. The struggle to retrieve something — even if unsuccessful — strengthens the associated neural connections. This is called the Desirable Difficulty principle: the harder retrieval is, the stronger the memory trace left behind.
Getting an answer wrong and then checking the correct answer can actually produce stronger memory than getting it right the first time. The emotional salience of "I was wrong about that" tags the correction as worth remembering.
Spaced Repetition — The Force Multiplier
Retrieval practice becomes dramatically more powerful when combined with spaced repetition — the practice of reviewing material at increasing intervals as it becomes better learned.
The logic: memory decays predictably over time (Ebbinghaus's Forgetting Curve). If you review material just before you would naturally forget it, the memory reconsolidates and the forgetting curve resets at a higher level. Do this enough times and information moves into long-term storage.
The optimal review schedule for most material looks roughly like: review on day 1 → day 3 → day 7 → day 21 → day 60. Apps like Anki implement this automatically using an algorithm that surfaces cards just before you'd forget them. The result is that you can maintain large amounts of information with surprisingly little daily time — because you're only reviewing what you actually need to review.
Applying This to Vocabulary Learning
For GRE vocabulary (or any high-volume word list), retrieval practice and spaced repetition are essentially the only efficient methods. A list of 3,000 GRE words studied purely through reading word lists has a terrible ROI. The same list studied through quiz-based flashcards with spaced repetition is manageable in 3–4 months of 20 minutes per day.
The most effective flashcard format includes:
- The word and its pronunciation on the front
- Definition, a model sentence, and one mnemonic or etymology clue on the back
- A usage example that creates an emotional or visual hook, not just a dictionary sentence
Example: Loquacious — tending to talk a lot. Better example sentence than "She was loquacious": "My uncle is so loquacious that family dinners always run two hours over schedule." The second version is memorable because it's specific and relatable.
Applying This to Spelling and Language Rules
Spelling rules — especially in Korean, where spacing and conjugation rules are notoriously irregular — are another area where retrieval practice dramatically outperforms passive review. Reading a grammar rule once and thinking "I'll remember that" is almost never sufficient. The rule needs to be tested in context, gotten wrong, corrected, and then tested again in a different context.

Brain dump: After reading a chapter or attending a lecture, close all materials and write down everything you can remember. Don't look anything up. The incomplete recollection is the point — your brain is being forced to retrieve, and the gaps you notice are exactly what needs more attention.
The Feynman technique: Explain the concept you're studying to an imaginary 10-year-old. The gaps in your explanation reveal the gaps in your understanding with brutal efficiency. This is retrieval practice plus comprehension testing simultaneously.
Delayed notes review: Review your notes from a meeting or class session 24 hours later — not immediately. After one night's sleep, the forgetting process has begun. Reviewing at that point creates a genuine retrieval challenge and strengthens retention far more than same-day review.
