On the TOEFL Reading section, you will encounter words you do not know. This is guaranteed. No vocabulary list can cover every word in academic English. What separates high scorers is not knowing every word — it is the ability to infer meaning from context quickly and accurately.

Why Context Inference Matters

The TOEFL Reading section gives you 54–72 minutes for 3–4 passages. Stopping to puzzle over each unknown word kills your time and breaks your comprehension flow. More importantly, TOEFL tests your ability to understand meaning in context — not isolated vocabulary recall. Context inference is exactly what the test rewards.

Step 1 — Identify the Word's Grammatical Role

Before trying to guess the meaning, identify what grammatical job the unknown word is doing in the sentence.

  • Noun (subject/object): It names something. Look at what acts on it or what it does.
  • Verb: It describes an action or state. The subject and object constrain its meaning.
  • Adjective/adverb: It modifies. What quality or manner is being described?

Example: "The scientist used a centrifuge to separate the mixture."
Even without knowing "centrifuge," you can infer from the verb "separate" and object "mixture" that it is a device used for separation.

Step 2 — Identify Signal Words Around the Target

Academic English often provides semantic clues through signal words. Learn to recognize these patterns:

  • Definition signals: "A, or B" / "A, which is B" / "A, known as B" → A equals B
  • Contrast signals: "unlike," "however," "in contrast," "although," "but" → opposite meaning
  • Similarity signals: "similarly," "just as," "like," "also" → comparable meaning
  • Example signals: "for example," "such as," "including" → hint at the category

Example: "The laconic general spoke briefly, unlike his verbose advisors."
"Unlike" signals contrast. "Verbose" means wordy. Therefore, laconic means concise or brief.

Step 3 — Analyze Word Roots and Affixes

More than 60% of English words derive from Latin or Greek roots. Recognizing roots and affixes lets you decode unfamiliar words structurally.

  • mis- (wrong): misinterpret, misguide, miscalculate
  • -ology (study of): biology, psychology, geology, anthropology
  • pre- (before): prerequisite, precede, prehistoric
  • -rupt (break): interrupt, erupt, disrupt, corrupt
  • bene- (good): benefit, benevolent, beneficial, benefactor
  • mal- (bad): malfunction, malignant, malevolent, malpractice

Example: "The company's malfeasance led to a major scandal."
mal- (bad) + feasance (doing/act) → wrongdoing or misconduct.

The Full Inference Sequence

  1. Encounter unknown word — do not stop
  2. Finish reading the full sentence (and the next one)
  3. Identify signal words nearby
  4. Check for recognizable roots or affixes
  5. Determine the word's grammatical role
  6. Form your best guess and substitute it back in — does the sentence make sense?
High TOEFL scorers do not know every word. They have a reliable system for handling the ones they do not know. That system is trainable — and it transfers to GRE, GMAT, and real academic reading.

Practice this: next time you read any English text, when you hit an unknown word, do not look it up immediately. Run through the three-step inference process first. Check your guess afterward. Repeat this daily and your inference accuracy will measurably improve within weeks.
